GOD Looks in the Heart
1 Samuel 16:7
NLT 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
It is sobering to think that GOD looks at the heart! The immediate thing that comes to mind for me is this . . . When He does what does He see!
When Samuel was sent by GOD to Jesse to seek the person GOD had in mind from that family to be the next king of Israel, even he was a little confused as to what or who GOD had in mind. After each of Jesse’s sons were brought before Samuel, he was genuinely impressed with what he saw—until the LORD said, I don’t see things the way you see them—people judge by outward appearance, but I [the LORD] look at the heart.
And the man GOD chose was David –a very unlikely hero but someone who would prove to be very different to Saul, who was the popular people’s choice. The difference between the two is immense. For instance, in Saul’s eyes—Saul was King whereas in David’s eyes, GOD was always King. Saul sought Saul’s will, whereas David sought the LORD’s will. And even when he failed, he still recognised that GOD’s will was the ONLY way to abundant life. But here’s the thing—would any of us have ever recognised that this simple shepherd boy had so much potential?
And that is what should be such an encouragement to us . . . because appearance doesn’t reveal what people are really like . . . and it doesn’t reveal what their true value is, or what their true potential is. In fact, you may have nothing in your outward appearance to indicate your true potential in Christ—but it is there—if only you are willing to give the LORD your whole HEART! If we do, there is certainly no limit to what GOD can achieve in your life
